Strong Women, Strong BonesPutnam, 2000, $23.95 hardcover Reviewed by Joan Price. © Joan Price. May not be reprinted without permission.
This book is aimed at helping you prevent and treat osteoporosis through exercise and nutrition. The exercise advice includes strength training, weight-bearing aerobic exercise, stretching, and balance, with illustrated, "bone-boosting" exercises provided. The nutritional advice won't have you spending your whole paycheck on supplements; rather, you're encouraged to get your "bone-friendly" nutrients through fruits, vegetables, soy, and high-calcium foods, plus a calcium/vitamin D supplement. The authors, Tufts University researcher Miriam Nelson and award-winning health writer Sarah Wernick, are a superb team. Nelson knows the science (including the latest research) about keeping bones strong and how to put that information into action; Wernick knows how to present the material so that it's easy to understand and use. Their books are winners because they empower women to keep themselves healthy with simple, trustworthy, science-based advice. (I wish more health, fitness, and diet bestsellers could claim that!)
