Show this to your boss! (If you are the boss, consider how you can help your employees get active with a fitness event or regular employee exercise program.)

Employee physical activity programs save employees money! In The President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports Physical Activity and Fitness Research Digest (9/96), Larry R. Gettman, PhD, summarized studies on the economic benefits of physical activity programs. The bottom line: The benefits of employee exercise programs far outweigh the costs.

  • A 14-year study showed that the fittest employees had 1/8 as many injuries as the least-fit, and unfit employees had twice the injury costs.
  • GE Aircraft employees who were members of the company's fitness center for three years lowered their average annual health care costs from $1,044 to $757 per individual. In contrast, non-member costs increased from $773 to $941 per person.
  • One company with a fitness program reported no increase in medical costs, while a comparable company with no fitness program had a 35% increase in medical costs.
  • Per person, physically active employees at Mesa Petroleum Company spent $217 less on medical claims and took 21 fewer hours of sick time than sedentary employees.
