| Make Exercise a Treat, Not a Treatment! --by Joan Price ©Joan Price. May not be reprinted without permission. The only way you'll stick to an exercise program is if you enjoy it. Period. Make your goal to create an enjoyable lifestyle that is full of physical activity. In other words, make exercise a highlight of your day, not a chore. That way you'll want to keep doing it! Then you'll start to see how a regular program of physical activity helps get you closer to your goals, whether they include improvements in personal appearance, increased energy, health gains, weight management, self-esteem, quality of life, or any combination of those. Once you've made exercise a habit--and you'll have to trust me on this if you've been habitually inactive -- you'll feel so good when you do it and afterward that you'll want to continue. Getting started is the hard part. You're not a confirmed couch potato. A whopping 46 million currently inactive adults say they would like to begin a regular exercise program. Like them, maybe you feel out of shape, discouraged, and alienated by past exercise experiences. You can make a change -- with the right motivation and information. I contend that there's nothing wrong with you, your body, or your will power that stops you from exercising. I don't think shame ever got someone to want to make a change anyway. You are not the problem, but rather the faulty information, false promises and misdirection you may have received in the past. You're simply missing that part of the puzzle that makes movement fun. Instead of trying to change you, let's emphasize the parts of your life that work well and add in some parts that will make you feel better about yourself and enjoy your body more. A great first step is to find some physical activities that you enjoy enough to do. You will enhance your life in the long run and, if this is a goal, lose body fat. Most important, you will feel better--physically, mentally, and emotionally -- right away. You will feel more vigorous, productive, sexy, and creative when you make exercise a part of your life.
